30s and Thriving: Your Financial Milestone Roadmap

Your 30s mark a pivotal decade for your financial journey. It’s the bridge between your cavalier 20s and your responsibility-laden 40s. As your career’s momentum kicks into high gear, this is the time to establish a robust financial foundation that will stand you in good stead for decades to come. Here are six money milestones you should try to hit in this momentous decade:

  • Paying off High-Interest Debt

Focus aggressively on paying off credit card debt, personal loans, and other high-interest obligations. The interest you save by eliminating these debts often exceeds what you might earn through investments. Consider the debt avalanche method, paying minimums on all debts while directing extra payments toward the highest interest rate debt first. You could also consider one personal loan to consolidate multiple different loans and make managing the repayment easier.

  • Having a 6-month Emergency Fund

In your 30s, getting laid off, having a sick or aging parent, or being struck by a major unanticipated expense may require more than a 3-month emergency fund. A 6-month fund might sound like a high figure to reach, but if you start putting some money aside in a high yield savings account every month, it’s not unachievable.

  • Investing 10% or More of Your Salary

As you start making more in your 30s, you must also increase the investing percentage. Ideally invest a minimum of 10% of your paycheck. This could be a combination of mutual funds, index funds, individual stocks, or other investment vehicles that align with your risk tolerance and timeline.

  • Investing in Retirement

Your thirties are prime years for retirement savings due to compound interest. And even though retirement may seem like a distant reality, it’s never too early to start planning. Start a retirement fund by opening a dedicated savings account.

  • Putting your eggs in Different Baskets

Having an income stream portfolio that can withstand unexpected situations will serve you well. No matter how secure your primary stream of income is, look for ways to earn passive income. The more streams you have, the better buffer you’ll get against the vagaries of life.

  • Protecting Your Assets

As your net worth grows, insurance becomes crucial. Evaluate your health, disability, and life insurance needs, and then make sure you have up-to-date insurance for everything. This will ensure that unexpected events don't derail your financial progress.

Your thirties set the stage for long-term financial success. Focus on these milestones to build wealth and security that will benefit you for life.
